In Sant’Antioco, far from the beaten track and the roar of the waves, lies a place unlike any other in the world: the Museo del Bisso, guardian of a thousand-year-old tradition passed down by word of mouth, by hand… and with the heart. If you’re in the vicinity of Palma de Sols, this is a place you must visit at least once in your lifetime. 🌊🧶

📍 Where is it?

In the historic centre of Sant’Antioco, at 168 Via Regina Margherita, lies the entrance to the museum-workshop where marine bisso – a precious and ancient silk derived from the filaments of the Pinna nobilis, a giant Mediterranean shell – is preserved and processed.

🪡 What is bisso?

Also known as ‘the silk of the sea’, byssus is an extremely fine, lustrous fibre, lighter than air and more precious than gold. It has been used since ancient times to weave sacred garments, royal cloaks and ritual objects. Today, in Sant’Antioco, Chiara Vigo, heir to an ancestral tradition, is the last master in the world to work with it according to ancient methods.

🧶 Why visit the museum?

People don’t come here just to look, but to hear a living story. Chiara Vigo welcomes visitors, recounts the origins of bisso, explains the rules of harvesting (which today is carried out only on strands that have already come loose, to protect the environment), shows them the looms and the embroidery, and sometimes… sings. Because bisso, even before it is a fabric, is spirit, silence and memory.
