Among the most iconic and captivating landscapes of south-western Sardinia lies a lighthouse that seems to have stepped straight out of a poem: the Mangiabarche Lighthouse, just a few minutes from Calasetta on the island of Sant’Antioco. Isolated, unadorned and shrouded in an air of mystery, this little lighthouse is one of those places that stays with you. 🌊⚓

📍 Where is it?

The lighthouse is situated off the coast of the Punta Mangiabarche cliffs, in the Calasetta area. It is visible from the coast and easily accessible by car from Palma de Sols.

🌊 Why is it called that?

The name “Mangiabarche” is no coincidence. This stretch of sea, often battered by strong winds and currents, is infamous for the shipwrecks it has caused in the past. The lighthouse, built to guide sailors away from the rocks, is now a symbol of protection and resilience.

📸 What is there to do?

  • Stop and admire the lighthouse at sunset, when it stands out as a silhouette against the orange sky.

  • Don’t forget your camera: the contrast between the black volcanic rocks, the turquoise sea and the white tower makes for some picture-perfect shots.

  • If you’re lucky and the sea is calm, you might spot a few local fishermen at work right below the lighthouse.

🎣 Local council:

The surrounding area offers peaceful spots that are perfect for a stroll, a moment of reflection, or simply listening to the sound of the waves. It’s also ideal out of season, when the silence heightens the magic of the place.

👉 Whether you’re looking for untamed beauty, photo opportunities or stories to cherish, the Mangiabarche Lighthouse is a must-see on your trip to Sant’Antioco.
