Just a few minutes from the centre of Sant’Antioco, nestled amidst the greenery and tranquillity of the Is Pruinis area, lie the Domus de Janas: ancient tombs carved into the rock, also known as the ‘fairy houses’ in Sardinian folklore. A place suspended between nature and mystery, perfect for those who love to wander off the beaten track. 🌿✨

Domus de Janas di Is Pruinis a Sant’Antioco, antica tomba preistorica scavata nella roccia con camere funerarie illuminate dalla luce naturale e circondate da roccia vulcanica e vegetazione.

🏛️ Now a UNESCO World Heritage Site

From 12 July 2025, the Domus de Janas will officially be included on the UNESCO World Heritage List as part of the serial site ‘Funeral Traditions in Prehistoric Sardinia’. This recognition celebrates their Outstanding Universal Value and confirms their importance as one of the most extensive and significant examples of subterranean funerary architecture in the western Mediterranean. The Domus de Janas of Is Pruinis are therefore part of a millennia-old heritage that spans the entire island.

📍 Where are they located?

The Domus de Janas are located in the countryside around Is Pruinis, in the inland area of the island of Sant’Antioco. They can be reached via narrow country lanes (ideally by car or mountain bike) and are set amidst a hilly landscape dotted with olive trees, Mediterranean scrub and dry stone walls.

🧭 What are they?

The Domus de Janas are prehistoric tombs dating back to the Late Neolithic period (5th millennium BC), carved directly into the rock. They have simple yet striking shapes, with burial chambers modelled on the dwellings of the time. The name ‘Domus de Janas’ means ‘houses of the fairies’ because, according to legend, they were inhabited by small magical creatures who acted as guardians of the earth.

👣 Why visit them?

  • Because they are a fascinating example of rock art, now recognised worldwide

  • Because the path leading there is surrounded by nature and offers unspoilt views

  • Because it is one of those quiet, unspoilt places where you can sense the island’s ancient spirit

🌿 Practical tips:

  • Wear comfortable shoes: the ground is unpaved and a bit uneven

  • Take some water and a hat with you if you're going out during the hottest part of the day

  • If you love photography, the contrast between the stone, the vegetation and the sky makes for some stunning shots

  • There are no detailed directions: use GPS or ask the locals, who know the area well

👉 The Domus de Janas at Is Pruinis are much more than just an archaeological site: they offer a glimpse into a distant past, where myth and reality merge within the rock. Today, with its UNESCO recognition, this place has rightfully taken its place among the world’s treasures to be preserved and celebrated. A hidden corner of the island that is well worth exploring at a leisurely pace and with respect.
