If you’re in Palma de Sols or visiting Sardinia’s south-western coast, there’s one place you simply mustn’t miss: the Basilica of Sant’Antioco Martire, the beating heart of the island of the same name. A journey through faith, archaeology and mystery, taking you on a walk… underground. 🌿⛪

📍 Where is it?
The basilica is located in the centre of the village of Sant’Antioco, at Piazza Parrocchia, 22 – 09017 Sant’Antioco (SU).

🍍 What makes this church special?
It is not just a church: it is one of Sardinia’s oldest early Christian basilicas, built over a network of catacombs where, according to tradition, persecuted Christians sought refuge and where the relics of the patron saint are laid to rest.
Descending into the catacombs is like stepping back in time. A sacred silence accompanies you through the tunnels, rock-cut tombs and remains of frescoes. It is one of the most moving places on the entire island.
🎨 What to see:
The early Christian catacombs, accessible from the chancel
The sacred statue of Saint Antioco
The central nave and the side chapels
The crypt, the sarcophagus and the tuff dome
